My name is Doris McManus I am a Junior at the University of South Alabama. I am seeking a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. After completing this degree I hope to to teach third grade. My strengths are English particularly writing and I enjoy math. I have tutored other college students in both these subjects while at South Alabama. After teaching for a couple of years I would like to return to college and seek my Master's degree in Elementary Education.
I would like to teach in the public education system. Staying local in Mobile is also very important to me. I have a family and I wouldn't want to up root them. I am a very hard worker and I think teaching is the most important job in the world. My philosophy is with out teachers we wouldn't have doctors and lawyers. I really do get a joy from teaching that I've never found at any other job I have held. My past employment has been in retail. I have worked for Wal-Mart for the past ten years. I feel this job has really prepared my for public education system because it has taught me not only how to deal with the general public ,but also work ethics.

Wiki's and Wikipedia
Wiki is a great resource for students who need to write a report on any subject. Through this search engine they can access articles websites and encyclopedias on a vast number of subjects too. Teachers can also access it to research a subject they need more information on or to answer a question a student asked and they couldn't answer. This search engine can also be accessed from any computer with Internet connection.
Wikipedia is also a very useful search engine. You can use this site to research topics. This information is updated frequently however, since any one can change the information posted its accuracy could be questioned. I would highly recommend both of these sites. I will use both in my classroom. They are very easily navigated and student friendly.

Google Tools and Docs
Google tools and Docs can level the playing field because they are readily available to use. You do not have to purchase special programing to be able to use it. Your able to put to together professional presentations, spreadsheets and word documents. All you need is access to a computer and Internet connection. Students can use public library facilities and they can create a free account and save their work they did away from school and using another computer I will be able to access their work.
They do not have to worry about printing or saving to a flash drive if they do not have one. I think anything that saves money and cuts down on needing paper which, in turn helps the environment is a wonder asset to the students and the environment. And in my opinion Google tools are more user friendly than Microsoft's Version. I will definitely take advantage of Google tools in my classroom. I will also be using it myself to put together presentations. Their spreadsheet is great for keeping up with grades and your classroom budget. Word document will be useful for reports that students need to practice typing and navigating the Internet.

Podcasts/Videocast
Podcast/videocast is a great classroom tool. Students can watch short videos on specific topics and listen to short discussions on various educational materials. Teachers can also use these resources to expand their knowledge on certain topics and get a different vantage point. Students and teachers are able to connect with others locally and internationally by listening or watching these casts. You can also add these to Powerpoints to enhance a lesson plan.
Prerecorded podcasts also have uses for distance learning and absent students. When a teacher records a lecture or class discussion, that podcast can be made available to an absent student or to the class as a whole to listen to and critique later. It can also be posted with a podcast source for other students or teachers to use. In all cases, the podcast can be made available through a web site or transferred to mobile listening devices for students and teachers to listen to outside of the classroom.

Blogs As Teaching Tools
Blogs are a very useful classroom tool. They enable the students to become familiar with not only computers but connecting to other students using computers. Using blogs in the classroom eliminates learning being limited to just the classroom. Students can connect with other students on the bus or at home. In the case of younger students the teacher can assign a class mascot( a stuffed animal) one student each week can take the mascot home and take various pictures with it. Then on Monday the student can write about the adventures they shared of the weekend with the mascot and post it on the classroom blog. It teaches the students sequencing and basic computers skills plus, it allows parents to read their child's work.
Blogging is also great for teachers. It allows teachers to connect with other teachers all over the world. They can share lesson plans, class projects or ask questions if they just need advice. You can also publish school and classroom events. Lesson plans and homework assignment can be posted for parents.
